Fortune

「Jon Gales loves Google, but not for the reason you might think. It's av terrific search engine, sure, but what Gales really likes is that Google is making him money. Gales's website, Mobiletracker.net, is a compendium of news and reviews about cellphones that after a year and a half attracts about 200,000 users a month. Google supplies the ads for the site, visitors click on the ads, and because of the site's popularity, Google sends Gales monthly checks of $5,000 or more. That's a decent chunk of change for any sole proprietor. But for Gales, the numbers are eye-popping. He's only 19 and lives expense-free at home with his parents in Tampa, posting four or five items in the course of the day while parked on the living room couch with his laptop. Says Gales: "If things keep going the way they are going, I'll be making more money than my dad next year."」

Business 2.0誌「The 5 Lessons of 2004」という記事でも、

「Benjamin Chiu just earned his master's in mechanical engineering, but he hasn't bothered looking for a job yet. He doesn't need to. The 24-year-old runs a website from his San Francisco condo that nets him upwards of $20,000 a month. Chiu is an affiliate for Amazon and dozens of other online stores. The best part? He doesn't actually sell anything; instead, his website, bensbargains.net, hawks laptops, backpacks, and karaoke machines and refers all buyers to the merchants' websites.」

このことは、GoogleのCEOであるSchmidtが、インタビュー記事の冒頭で「What is it that people don't understand about Google?」

「The thing that people seem to miss about not just Google, but also our competitors, Yahoo, eBay and so forth, is that there's an awful lot of communities that have never been served by traditional media. There's a tremendous number of small businesses that have been able to get tremendous economic returns because all of a sudden their market is no longer a local market. But it's a global market of like-minded small businesses in a specific area.」
「We've seen tremendous growth in these sort of very small micro markets. There are so many of them that the numbers are very, very large.」

「Seth Godin, a well-known online advertising consultant and former Yahoo employee, used to be dubious about Google's prospects. Not anymore. "They were right, and I was wrong," he says. "They've created the first new and effective ad medium in 50 years. It's brilliant."」

New York Times 「Google Is Adding Major Libraries to Its Database」(要登録)によれば、

「Although Google executives declined to comment on its technology or the cost of the undertaking, others involved estimate the figure at $10 for each of the more than 15 million books and other documents covered in the agreements. Librarians involved predict the project could take at least a decade. 」

「The Benign Corporate Oligarchy」である。

「In the Google prospectus, Page rejected this nonsense in the kind of straightforward English sentences rarely encountered in securities filings. ''Many companies are under pressure to keep their earnings in line with analysts' forecasts. Therefore, they often accept smaller, predictable earnings rather than larger and less predictable returns,'' he wrote. ''Sergey and I feel this is harmful, and we intend to steer in the opposite direction.'' 」

「The young founders of Google don't have that kind of track record, so they sold stock to the public that comes with diluted voting rights. They were thus able to raise lots of money while still retaining control over the company. In the past, this has often spelled trouble. Executives who aren't accountable to shareholder votes can be prone to mischief. The Google founders seem to be saying that executives get into more mischief when they are overly solicitous of short-term investors. Mindful of all the companies that went astray and sometimes lied to meet analysts' expectations, Google will not even issue earnings forecasts. Like latter-day corporate barons, they advance the proposition that shareholders will be better off if the executives are trusted more and interfered with less.」
